About Us & FAQs

About Us:
The Brown County Pet Rescue League is a volunteer, not-for-profit organization dedicated to finding homes for abandoned, stray, and surrendered dogs and cats.

While we are a newly formed rescue, we have already placed many dogs and cats into loving and responsible homes.

We are all volunteers and no one is paid for their services, so the donations we receive go directly to providing supplies and medical services for the animals.

Most of the animals we take into foster care are from Aberdeen and the surrounding areas. However, as we grow, we hope to actively network with different rescues all over South Dakota and the surrounding states to help animals find homes where they are loved and taken care of.
We recognize that pet education and responsible pet ownership are important.
We are in the process of offering educational programs and services through the schools and the community.

We believe strongly in spaying and neutering. We are working with the North East South Dakota Spay & Neuter Coalition to offer low cost spaying and neutering.

Education is a means to change how people relate to animals. It has also been shown to be an effective way to diminish problems like overpopulation and animal abuse.

You can see our complete mission statement and purpose in our Bylaws.

Would you like to help?

If your answer is yes, please consider being a foster home! You can make the difference between life and death for an animal. Our rescue does not have a shelter. Instead, we place our animals into foster homes where they learn skills that will help them to successfully become part of a family. We provide everything for our animals, so there are no costs to you. We are also available around the clock to offer support and guidance to our foster families. Fostering also allows us to learn all about our animals. This helps us to connect them with the right forever family.

Come and volunteer! We are always looking for help with events, collecting donated items, taking animals to vet appointments, and helping to spread the word about our rescue.

 FAQs
Here are some common questions we are asked.

- Do you provide free or reduced price spay/neuter or vaccinations?
No.  We can refer you to the NESD Spay & Neuter Coalition to see if you meet their qualifications.  We are not veterinarians and cannot give your pets vaccinations.

- Do you pay your workers?
No.  We are all volunteers.  Donations and adoption fees received are used for vet bills, supplies and administrative expenses related to the rescue.

- Why don't you just build a shelter?
Shelters are expensive.  At this time we are a foster-focused group.  We feel fostering, rather than sheltering animals is less stressful for the animal and more conducive to finding the perfect fur-ever home for them since they become more comfortable in a home setting and our fosters help us by determining each animal's personalities, likes/dislikes, etc.  They also help us by providing training and behavioral corrective training, especially with puppies and kittens.

- Can I bring you a dog/cat I found?
Yes.  We do require that you have made a good faith effort to find the owner, and if we have fosters available we will be happy to help you.

- I found some baby bunnies/a fawn/raccoons/wild animal.  Can I bring them to you?
No.  We strongly suggest you call your local conservation officer or game warden.  Wild, undomesticated animals require facilities we do not have.
